if he is a welder or mechanic of any sort he could have flakes of metal or other items in his eyes that require a opptomitrist to look at and posibbly remove with a special magnet. DONT USE ONE AT HOME because you could pull pieces of metal across the middle of the eye ball and scratch it. i would take him to the eye doctor immedatly

Sounds like he could have Blepharitis or dry eye syndrome. I have them both. Blepharitis is like dandruff of the eyelashes. Tiny flakes of skin collect and need to be cleaned out twice a day with cotton buds and a solution of baby shampoo and water. If they aren't cleaned out then the symptoms are sore eyes and numerous eye infections and a feeling that there is constant sand in your eyes. Your doctor is the best person to see because he will refer you to the eye hospital for advice and treatment. Dry eye syndrome is self explanatory really-I can't produce tears to lubricate my eyes. I have to use eye drops every two hours for the forseeable future. Viscotears are the best i have found.Good luck.

I'm no doctor but i have an idea it may be conjunctivitis, when he wakes up in the morning, if he has more sleep in his eyes than usual it could be this. Another cause is maybe he has a sty coming.

I'm no doctor, but i think he should see one... I suggest that he doesn't touch them at all and shouldn't spend any time watching a PC or TV screen. what's more resting them (i.e sleeping) would probably help, he could just be tired and he's rubbign them too much...
However, as i said i'm no doctor so it's probably best to ask a specialist.

sounds exactly like "arc eye" which is a condition that welders get when they accidentally look at the electrical arc.
if he has seen something like this today then it should go by tomorrow.
good luck
