It sounds like you don't want to erase everything on the drive. If that is the case try going to PCWORLD.COM and do a search for "delete duplicate files " or "disk organizer" . There are several programs that are free and will find exact duplicates and allow you to delete ones you don't want. Another first try might be to use Windows DISK CLEANUP. Go to START BUTTON _PROGRAMS_ACCESSORIES_SYSTEM TOOLS_DISK CLEANUP . The above two approaches may get you down to a managable count.
If you want to go further you can look for any application programs you never use anymore and uninstall them (don't just delete). Go to CONTRL PANEL and open ADD/REMOVE programs. Highlight and uninstall one at a time. Versions of Windows are a little different so use your version's HELP if you need to.
Beyond the above you will have to open files to see if they are worth keeping.

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.

Your files are etched into the hard drive. It would take a professional to clear the hard drive. Even if you delete the files from it's 'file' to rid them entirely is to clear the hard drive.
