The model has to include the zener voltage (reverse knee), not just the forward characteristics of the diode. I don't know what it is called in your textbook.

As long as the diode you are using has a zener voltage (also known as the Peak Inverse voltage for regular non-zener diodes)greater than the peak applied voltage, there won't be a problem with the diode conducting in reverse.

to me your question isnt very specific,

but in most cases constant voltage drop model is safe bet, shockleys equation sucks
