Get a food grinder. You can grind up just about anything to get him used to the taste, then as he gets used to it you can offer small soft bites of food. You can even use a fork to mash his food. This is what I did with my daughter. we did puree, then ground, then fork mashed, and now she eats soft table foods. she eats whatever we eat. I just have to watch meats and things, because she is a VERY late teether. she only has the bottom 2. But she eats well.
as for not feeding himself, he will.........mine was late with that too. I would put some food on her highchair tray while I fed her. She just played with it. After a while, I would put more food on her tray and feed it to her from the tray. eventually she started to get the idea and pick up food and eat it.
You can try Gerber Graduates.......they are great for toddlers. the meat sticks are wonderful, as are the fruit and veggie dices.
good luck!!

This may sound a little wierd, but get the mac and cheese box with the scooby shapes, or something similar. And either make mac and cheese or take the noodles and mix them with spegatti sauce, or just plain ole noodles will work fine. Show him/her how to eat them, you try one and then try feeding him one. and just let him sit in the high chair and eventually they will catch his interest and he will hopefully pick them up and start putting things in his mouth. Most babies are good at putting things in thier mouths! lol Those meat sticks by gerber work excellent also, anything gerber graduates i would try! If you know what flavor/ taste he likes the most, then mix is with some noodles or something he has to pick up. That may get the ball rolling! And if all else fails, give him some crackers (saltine kinds) and let him go at it. Thats home my daughter learned.
I wish you the best!

He is pretty much at the age that he can eat anything you eat. Stay away from nuts and honey though. He can get an allergy from nuts or choke, and honey is not good until at least over the age of 2. I would just give him whatever you eat, but cut up for his size. It would also be good for him to be treated as though he was the same as his parents. Even though he is young, this is the time children learn and retain the most.

13 month old can eat what u eat, just mashed up a bit maybe (f he has trouble with lumps) He will learn to fee himself sooner or later, i work with children at this age and i find it good to put the food on the fork and then leave it back on the plate, it encourages the children to lift the fork themselves. They get frustrated when they cant get enough on the fork by themsleves so it gives them a little confidence.

Anything that he can chew. Dont be worried that he wont feed himself. Lots of babies dont feed themselves at that age. Mine started feeding herself probably around 14 months old. Shes 19 months old now and shes just learning how to use a fork and spoon.

WOW that age is fun LOL, what we did was invest in a small food processor and whatever we had for dinner (meat) we would put it in there with the 3rd baby food veggie's and he loved it. If you are trying to get him to start picking up foods we started with spaggetti noodles chopped small mixed with his fav. flavors (he picked up quick with this) also those gerber puffs are great they disolve quickly (a little messy tho). also banana cut up small he loved to squish them in his fingers (diffrent textures are important at this age) he would eventually start eatting them. My son loves to eat everything we do so the food chopper worked awesome (just make sure if you use seasoning to rinse most of it off).

Mashed Potatos, Mac and cheese are good ideas. Need to know if the boy has teeth growing yet. Of course by that age my mother was feeding me hotdogs and chicken nuggets. Wonder if she ever had any car tires come up missing around that time....

mac & cheese - he shouldn't be able to choke on it & it's really not too messy.
Does he just not like getting his hands messy & that's why he won't pick up food? try some Gerber chicken or beef sticks.
My daughter also LOVED the Gerber pasta pick-ups. Again, not too messy if that's the problem.\
Good luck.

Just give him food from your plate. Steamed veggies, cut up meat, rice, potatoes, whole wheat pasta...
Mac'n'cheese (unless homemade) is crap and should be avoided at all costs. As is anything made by gerber... stick to whole, fresh foods... avoid prepackaged anything.
What does he do when you put food in front of him?
