This is not necessarily a question; more of a gripe. My daughter is 15 years old. During those 15 years, I have never collected a welfare check. I have always worked. I have also never collected steady child support from her father. He is $7000 in arrears. About a year ago, my employment ended to the store closing. I had the opportunity to go back to school to finish my social work degree. So, I am now receiving a TANF check while finishing my degree. About a week ago, her father was feeling gracious and put $100 on my case. However, I never received it. It went to the state since I am on public assistance. Despite him being in arrears and me never being on welfare, they still took that payment. What about all those years that I worked and paid taxes? It is just frustrating.

I can certainly see how this is frustrating for you. I do understand that a state will require you to pay back the TANF money you recieve but there should be a way for you to appeal the fact that they took it now. You need to explain the situtation to them and ask that you get the money now and promise to pay them back once you are working again. At the same time you are talking to them about that, ask them why the hell they are not aggressively pursuing him for the support he owes, they should be garnishing his wages and a taking his income tax returns until he is caught up on his past due support.

Sounds like the same crap they pull in Virginia! Maybe we need to move up North where they give away all kinds of money and food stamps...more money for each child...CRAZY! Good luck...it is very unfair to the people who are down on there luck and need a little help...

I understand. that has also happened to me and nothing you can do about it as long as you have evr drew it or had stamps or medical coverage they will take every dollar till they are paid back. So much for looking out for the kids needs.

How does it feel to finally get screwed by the state? I figure you are finally getting what you deserve. You probably had his child against his wishes and then as soon as he found out, he wanted you to have a abortion and you would not do it. So you got a divorce and took half of what he had, then had the gall to accept welfare from the state. I am glad that you are getting the shaft. Thanks to the state.

understandable grip; all of it.

state will take it all (any he gives) til they are paid first.

as for your studies, keep at it. we (our society) need good people like you out there.

as for the arrears, pull rank on your caseworker. write your states Attorney General and your states Regional FEDERAL Child Support Office. give your contact info, case number, his info, and the arrears amount. ask them what they are doing about.

tell them $100 is unexceptable. tell them you respectfully request that the state and federal laws be applied to your case, and more be done to enforce it.

hang in there, your doing great. it just feels like back peddling sometimes, but you'll come out on top... you'll see.
