WHY do you IDIOTS answer questions when you DON'T have a CLUE???

Hand-stripping is EASY!!!!
& Borders the SIMPLEST of all!!!! NO "pattern" at all!
NOT difficult,NOT "painful" & NO TOOLS necessary!!

PULL *ALL* the blown coat (the GUARD HAIRS!) only leaving a LITTLE bit of eyebrow & beard!
If the hair comes out easily,it's DEAD & NEEDS to go !
A stripping blade/knife will help(it just takes a bigger "bite") but it's not necessary!

*********NEVER****** clipper a Border! You'll RUIN the coat!
You can take the dog to ANY pro groomer for a "sanitary" clip-crotch & butt ONLY!

& yeah,I HAVE Borders *&* Norwich & have hand-stripped for DECADES!!! It's NOT rocket science!

Border Terriers must be stripped to maintain AKC standards. The first two times they get stripped they often whimper because they're scared but after that your Border will likely not even flinch. If you clip your Border, his hair will begin to thin and lose it's wonderful color. After a few clippings your Border will become more of a grey/silver color with a softer, thinner coat. This is not the accepted Border look! Go for the stripping by a professional who works with mainly Borders. Do not go to Petsmart or any other such location because they're not used to working with the breed. They could hurt your Border.

Hand-stripping is a very detailed process that should only be done by a professional. If you want to learn how to do it, you'll have to find a professional groomer or breeder/handler to help you learn the proper way to do it. You may be able to find a local breed club for Border Terriers, and perhaps they can point you in the right direction. It's also a very long, painstaking process. Fully stripping a Border Terrier can take 2-4 hours! Lots of wear and tear on your hand/wrist/arm, especially if not done properly. I'm a groomer and know how to hand-strip, but choose not to do it because of the time and effort involved!
It's not one of those things that can be explained to you. You'll have to learn about skin and coat care, the anatomy of the skin, the phases of growth/hair cycles, "rolling" the coat, etc. And you'll really have to watch someone do it before you'll really "get" it.
Good luck!

PS - for the loud-mouthed "expert" who called us all idiots. If you had studied ANY bit of canine anatomy, specifically the anatomical structure and growth phases of hair, you'd surely know that clippering (yes, it's spelled correctly on MY post, thank you) will absolutely NOT cause a coat to soften or change texture at all. The harsh coat WILL grow back, it will just take a long time to do so. The harsh hairs are called guard hairs (among other things), which take a lot longer to grow in than the soft undercoat. Since this is the case, once a coat is clippered down, it SEEMS as though the texture is forever changed. That's just the soft undercoat growing in faster than the harsh guard hairs, though.
And furthermore, stripping a Border Terrier is about more than just knowing the correct pattern. Done incorrectly, stripping CAN cause pain. It can also cause infections of the hair follicle, and not knowing WHICH hairs specifically to strip can cause your dog to look bald in spots, fluffy in others. Also, you don't just "pull out" the hairs. There is a specific method and direction in which you should pluck the hairs. You pluck the hair out in the direction that you would like the next hair to take that follicle to grow in.

You should be able to just pull small amounts of hair with your fingers. You can get things called 'finger condoms' from grooming retailers, if you can order those without laughing. They just help you grip. If the hair is difficult to pull out or the dog experiences undue discomfort, you're doing it wrong. You will find it comes out easier when the dog is warm, and the pores are open.
I use a stripping knife, it has a serrated edge that the grip the hair against with you thumb, and then pull. This should only be done on the main body of the dog, as it would be painful over sensitive areas. If it hurts, stop. Try doing a little at a time.

Unless you're going to show your doggy stripping is a long process and if not done properly can be painful to the doggy. A professional groomer will show you how it's done;but it took me about two weeks to learn and my Airedales looked a little moth eaten the first time I did it. A good bath with a quality shampoo and a lot of brushing is usually all your border terrier needs-unless you do want to show him, Clipping makes the coat soft-not that harsh terrier type.

i own a 1 yr old border terrier. its easy to strip her, i wait till she grows more hair on her back, so it looks thicker than other parts of her body. i take her outside and get her to sit, then gently but firmly take a bit of hair and pull straight on her bak towards ter tail. start at the neck work to tail. i do this every couple of months instead of waiting till she gets too scruffy. good luck.

The next time you take him to be clipped watch what the grooming process is. Watch and learn.
