Yes, the mold that may form would be toxic to those with mold allergies.

Probably not.

Unless they are somehow moistened, allowing the sugars to host little bacterial gremlins (you'll know by the smell and the fact that it's a brick instead of a powder), I wouldn't worry too much about 'toxic'.

More likely, the 'lift' from the baking soda/powder/cream of tartar will have lost it's zest, and no matter what else is in the mix, you'll make sad (but sweet) tortillas.

Generally, they are pretty forgiving, but if you've had one sitting around that long... splurge and buy another. Alternatively, baking stuff like that from scratch isn't really hard, and is a darn sight cheaper!

Best wishes!

I am with beebs

It is just as easy to make from scratch then you avoid all of the harmfull chemicals and preservatives, as well as it tasting so much better. But I really doubt they become any more toxic than they are to start with.

And consider this for pancakes

mix: water, eggs, oil , and dry mix

from scratch: egg, flour (self rising), buttermilk, sugar and oil
I prefer to use whole grain flour and add baking powder and soda, but you can just use self rising flour

to make the mix it requires 4 things, from scratch uses 5, why pay extra for the mix?

MOST of them are toxic to begin with, full of artificial ingredients and preservatives and other junk I find it quick to mix up batches at home using wholesome ingredients

No, they are not toxic, the taste just won't be FRESH. You may want to check for weevils in the mix or other pantry insects (ants, gnats).

Out of date is when it should be consumed. The way those preservatives are in there it should last longer. Check for bugs and if there are not any safe to use.
