Why would a guy make it seem more than it is?

I had a guy friend who said he was not dating anybody but he flirts with every woman in the room, stringing them along. We had a disagreement over mixed signals and he mentioned that a friend that I asked her about how I could straigthen things out with him, he said they were dating and they are not. He tells like two sides two everything which I don't know to trust what he tells me.

Sounds like a normal guy. He tells the truth to you, but lies in public.
