Barbizon Hotel was nice last time I stayed. You are near 5th avenue and can walk or take the bus to your destinations.

If you don't mind staying outside the Manhattan island, you can try searching for places in Queens. Astoria and Long Island City would be the 2 areas I'd recommend. I lived in Astoria/LIC border and it's nice and safe. It's still reachable by subways but you don't pay the Manhattan price. Try browsing through this site newyork.craigslist.org so you'll get the idea.

If you're looking for something below 1000 then Bronx is the place. Now,a really nice place is about 900 or a 1000 bucks in Manhattan.I'd say midtown of Manhattan is a really nice place to live but it's not cheap.
