filtering the blood when liver can't do the job

I agree with the_only_. Hemodialysis is an artificial means of filtering the blood. This is normally a function of the kidneys but when they are no longer able to do this a dialysis machine is used to take over this function. Without going into great detail, permanent access to the blood is established. During hemodialysis, blood is sent out of the body and circulates through a filtering system in the machine. The filtered blood is then returned to the body. There is also peritoneal dialysis which can be done at home. If you're interested in learning more about it, run a search for "peritoneal dialysis". You can also go this website

and learn how a dialysis machine works.

an artificial means of filtering toxins out of the blood stream. Used when the kidneys fail and can no longer do the job. Without such filtration, you die.
