I understand that smoking is really addicting, but what I don't understand is why my dad won't even try to quit. Especially because my mom died from lung cancer (caused by smoking). If he really loved me, he'd quit; wouldn’t he?

Your dad won't quit smoking unless he WANTS to quit smoking. The fact that he is denying that he has a problem (which is what it sounds like) makes it even harder.

This has nothing to do with you. Smoking is an addiction. Even though every person who smokes can quit if they really, truelly tried, most people lack the will power to quit.

Good luck, and I hope that your dad realizes that if he quits, it will save his life, and maybe even yours.

Your father is at very high risk of a second heart attack with continued smoking. I am sure he also knows this. If he doesn't then he should be informed that he may not survive a second attack and should write a will immediately as he may not have time for it when heart attack occurs inevitably. But addiction is a strange thing that some people are able to escape without much difficulty but some people finds it impossible to do so. There are two types of addicted people. One who enjoys the smoking so much so that they don't want to stop. Other type who wants to stop but cannot do so due to addiction. The first type is very difficult to manage. Still you should never stop trying. Many many people decide to stop by advise of loved ones. But try not to nag as it may produce the opposite effect. The second group can be helped by drugs which can make addiction to smoking less and there are nicotine replacement patches or lozenges which will help quit smoking. But it needs cooperation of a willing patient and should be started only with the advise of a doctor. Hope your father is in the second category and he will be able to stop.

My grandpa is the same way. He went to many doctors and "tried" many drugs, but said he couldn't stop. My other grandpa and grandma quit cold turkey. I think that goes to prove it comes down to the person. I'm sure he loves you and knows he's hurting you both by not quitting. My advice, be supportive I don't think there's much else you can do. I think that smoking like all addictions can be the only means of escape for some people, and maybe the death of your mother hurt him more than he admits and he tries to escape that with the feeling he gets from smoking. Hang in there, and be strong.

No. Loving you and quitting smoking aren't at all in the same league, He can love you and still need to smoke.

You undertand that smoking is really addicting? Then you've already answered your own question. He's addicted. That's why.

STOP nagging him! He has to decide for himself that it's his time to quit. It has nothing to do with loving you.

The best thing you can do, is to quietly ONE TME tell him that you hope he will be ready to quit soon. And then shut up about it already. The more you nag, the more you anger him. Making him angry just makes him turn away from the thought of quitting.

I know what I'm talking about. I may have quit years before I finally did, if people would have stopped nagging me about it!

It has nothing to do with you, its his addiction. My dad was dying of lung cancer and denied that it was his lifelong smoking that caused his cancer, and refused to quit. He smoked to his dying day. Don't take it personally.

Quitting smoking takes a lot of energy, self-control and self-confidence.

How's your father ? Maybe there is the answer.

Good luck !
