Hi, I will be planting a cherry tree in my back yard and I am a little worried about my dog eating the fruit or the pit...he is a 2 year old golden retriever. Thanks for all your help.

The fruit is fine, the pit should be avoided. The real danger in cherries is to livestock in the fall. When the leaves wilt and fall off the tree and there is not much grass, livestock often turn to these for food. Wilting condenses the toxins and often livestock will die because of this. Cyanide like toxins are in every part of the cherry tree except the fruit so avoid the tree if you think your dog will be regularly eating the fallen fruit from the ground.

I've never heard anything bad about the actual fruit from a cherry harming a dog. However, they may give him an upset stomach if he eats too many of them! Also, you may want to be careful of the pits. Since he's a larger dog it's probably less of a worry for choking (although it still CAN happen), but I'd be worried about him consuming too many. Many fruits' pits have some level of poison in them. This is a defense mechanism on the part of the tree to help ensure the species' survival (pits are toxic so animals won't eat them, therefore new generations of trees will grow). For example, apple seeds contain a level of arsenic, and from what I know, cherry pits contain cyanide (or some chemical that is composed about the same as cyanide).
Good luck!

Cherries aren't so bad for him but I would be worried about the pit. If he does get a cherrie he'd probably bite the pit and spit it out because dogs are smart like that but he might not so I'd watch him when he's around the tree and I think the best thing for you to do is build a small fence around the tree so he can't get too close to it. He stil might get them but they're less of a chance. If he does get the cheery try and get it from him and say no and scold him so he knows that's bad so that way you don't have t worry so much. But the dog will be curious so he probably will try and eat one so make sure he doesn't get the pit and if he does give him a minute to try and throw it up and give him some water and if he stil seems 2 be choking on it get him to the vet immidiatly.

SC was correct I don't know why someone gave them a thumbs down. The fruit won't hurt him but the rest of the tree could kill him. Also the pits could possibly cause internal bleeding resulting in death; So the ball is back in your court you have to decide if you take the chance or not.

Dogs are not suposed to eat food that are acidy (like tomatoes), high in spices, and no chocolate. As far as cherries the pit is the problem. If he chews on them he could get poisoned, ( I believe it's cyanid, but i'm not 100% sure). They usually don't chew pits because they are very hard. If they get swallowed they get pooped out.

I know of no reason you should be worried. Golden's eat anything they find on the ground though. I've never had a cherry tree for my Golden's to eat but they have eatten their fair share of stupid things.

I don't think you should be worried too much.

Might give him the runs but nothing else... If they can eat garbage they can eat cherries ;-)
