~~~mo ,,, For the same reason that Man-kind has dominantley formed Patriarchal Societys and Cultures. It's the Nature of The Beast, most prominently found in the general Physical Makeup of the Genders. Might makes Right. It's up to the female to develop, yes evolve, a Superior Intellect to counter-balance their Physical Shortcomings. Obviously, according to history and the current Geo-Political State as a result of Male Leadership, they are well on their way.
Because, while religions (or one of them, or many of them) were made by God/Gods/Godesses, churches were made by humans. And, by humans, I mean by the dominant hegemony, which has been patriarchal at least for millenia if not longer. Thus, the church built rules/justifications into its practices to place women in subordinate positions. Thus, the dominant men have another tool for keeping women subordinate. This is similar to the way that some churches justified slavery, to maintain their own power bases. Churches also work hand in hand with the other power centers to maintain their own power, and since political and social leaders have also ben historically male, it was in their best interest to support church policies that subordinated women.
Now, as to whether or not God intended women to be subordinate is a matter of belief. I do not believe so, because I think people are (intentionally and unintentionally) confusing the man-made church with the God-given religion.
In Islam, women and men are equal. What is happening is that society is changing how men view women. It's sad that women are being mistreated all over the world. Also, in Islam God is neither female or male.
I don't think it was God's will that women be subjugated, but that men take more of a leadership role and be responsible in their households, since God created man first. The scripture does tell women to respect their husbands, but it also tells husbands to love their wives.
Most religions are the product of primitive societies, and in these societies men are dominant because they are physically stronger. Were many new religions being created today, there would be equality. Women might even be dominant, as they often have greater capacity for emotion.
This happens moreso in the western religions than eastern ones, but the guiding principle is control and domination. Many church leaders considered women inferior and felt they would be a threat if they ever came into power or thought for themselves. This is why they actively hunted down and killed free-thinking women by calling them "witches." Millions of women were tortured and burned to death for something as simple as questioning authority and the church.
They were also trying to crush the old pagan worship of women figures and the divine feminine. By declaring women inferior, worthless (ok, worth 30 shekels of silver according to the bible - roughly half the worth of a man), and nothing more than property and reproductive machines (rape is ok according to the bible), it really undermined the pagan belief in women as something to be worshiped and appreciated.
because our roots are in nature. Men are more aggressive, which helps in a harsh world. women were around to keep men happy (unfair but true.) early religions figured we were spiritual equals, but physically they wanted the status quo kept. i''m sure many ancient men couldn't even comphrend submitting to a female God.
Because most religions used to be goddess centered. Men were sick of it so they twisted any new religions that came up to be male centered and treated the women like dirt.
Males wrote the books that religions follow, so naturally the books favour men. It is too bad that God never wrote anything.
