I'm ok with it. I'm a size 10, but need to lose about 5 lbs I gained since Thanksgiving. After that I'd like to lose an additional 10lbs before summer. If I lose the extra 10, great. If not, I'm not stressing over it. African Americans typically have a different idea of overweight than Caucasians. (I"m not talking obese, but shapely.) I'm 5'8", a size 10 and have some "junk in the trunk". That's considered a good thing in my community. However, if I were Caucasion, I think my girlfriends would be encouraging me to lose weight. The Caucasian threshold for being overweight seems to be significantly lower than ours. I have a Caucasian friend who is about 5'4" and 114 lbs. She constantly talks about how big her butt is. I look at her and think "What butt?". The thing is...SHE thinks it's big and unsightly.
I say that the priority should be health...not overweight or underweight...and exercise!

He could be right, after all, looking at music videos, the african american women and latin women don't look like they diet...they're all so thick! I think that's healthy....unless your like 300lbs why should you need to look like a Kate Moss runway model.
I'm half polynesian and my caucasian side shows only on my body type, I'm 5'7" and 115lbs and been this skinny all my life but I too, noticed that the polynesian men liked bigger women, never mind if they were polynesian or not, that was the look for them!! I noticed too, that most poly women tend to be on the big side so I just figured that is how the men got used to seeing them so of course they wouldn't put any pressure on them to be skinny....because of all that I ended up having a hard time finding a polynesian man that was okay with how I looked, mostly they liked my face but always said I need to gain more weight!!!
So I suppose this body image, whether it be big or small, is all about cultural image....after all, nobody ever said J-Lo needs to lose her big butt, lots of women are cramming down food to get a butt like that!
So just be happy with yourself....if you want to lose weight make sure you do it to please yourself, cause it sounds like your husband loves you even if you don't diet :)

Maybe we need to learn a great lesson from the African American Women. Sounds to me like these women have the right idea. Be comfortable with what you have.

Unless the entire African-American female population is solely limited to your husband's family, I don't think it's a fair or accurate assessment to ask why all black women don't diet just because the women in his family don't.
It differs from person to person but in my opinion, because black and Latino men seem to like their women a little thicker, there is generally less pressure from the media and popular culture for women of color to be stick thin.

Well I'm aware of my shape, and it's nice...now I like it to be tighter in area's and what not but if you don't mind me being real with you, African American women have beautiful bodies....now like any other race we have those who are obese but we keep ourselves together and our shape is off the hook! Our Men love our voluptuous hips and butt....it's simply attractive.

I think they just have different values about what it means to be beautiful. Either weight doesn't play into this or bigger is beautiful. Not everyone adopts warped American anorexic ideas of beauty. Too bad some of these values couldn't rub off on us white folks. We'd definitely be a lot more emotionally healthier and happier.

In general, black men like their women meaty, something to grab on to. I happen to be a thin, (maybe skinny) black women and there is nothing sadder in the black community than a skinny black girl. Even my husband, who is black, says I could use a little more weight. Of course this point of view does not apply to all.
Besides, bones ain't sexy!!! Embrace your curves!!!
