They were never part of us for they left us.
1JN 2:18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.

I use to walk that path and I know it well. They are mislead by a church and false images and explanation of the book. Then they realize these lies and figure, all religion is like this. Not taking into effect, that anything in life has bad seeds, no matter what it is.
I walked this path, I was just like them, laughed at it all, called it fools leading the fools. Then I found the right message, the truth. And I actually found it from science, science is what actually lead me to the bible and the truth.
For now I don't listen to a preacher nor a church, but I listen to the book. I don't believe in much of the goop and gunk that is out there with religion and I even believe there are many that claim they are but just walk in a lie, for the title only.
This goop and these false walkers is what gives the rest of us a bad image and then most that were told a lie (the atheists) then just assume all is like that. But its not. If most saw me, met me, talked to me, they wouldn't even guess I am christian for I never mention it, push it, I have nothing to show I am, no stickers, no signs, I don't carry my bible around, nothing. But I 100% believe.
Many think you have to "act like the fools in church" to be part of religion, and I blame that on the church.

This is the truth, and for this I applaude you, because if you have found someone that gives you so much love, unbounding love, everlasting and fullfilling love, then how could you ever set that aside.
The truth of the matter is that if after you have accepted Christ in your life, and feel His love, you cannot turn away, it woul dbe like turning away from someone so dear to you that you would feel you owed that person your life.
So those who have been changed, feel an over pouring of love, not stopped at all by what other people would say.
God bless you always

I take your point, but.....The flip side of that question is: Do you really believe people who claim to have a close and intimate relationship with God? Could this believe be the result of indoctrination and habit? If certain beliefs are instilled in a person from childhood and reinforced by family and friends and a lifetime of weekly meetings and sermons and literature and if that person spends countless hours in regular meditation and contemplation of these beliefs would they not seem real to that person even if they're not?

There are many people who were Christians but who have for some reason or another, have lost their faith. The Bible says that in the last days, there will be a "great falling away," and that some would depart from the faith. How can they depart from the faith if they were never in the faith?

So I broke your rules...
I know of very few atheists who say they "turned away" because their life was miserable with God. The majority of atheists I know, and for myself, chose atheism after a very long process of studying the bible and searching for answers.
You can believe what you want to believe about my christian years. I honestly don't care if you think I never knew god or not. To be truthful, you're probably right. I didn't know god...because he does not exist.

No, it's never been God that's the problem. My problem with religion are the nutters who try to manipulate people in His name.

Obviously, it's hard for you to accept things that contradict your faith. That's understandable. There are many, many people who refuse to acknowledge those things that seem contradictory.
