Are the three programs J2SE Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 10, J2SE Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 3, and Java 2 Runtime Enviroment, SE v1.4.2_03 needed for the computer to run. If some of them aren't please tell me which ones I can delete. Thanks so much, Brodster.

You don't need them to run your computer, so none is required.

Some programs written in Java and some Browser applets require a JRE.

Delete all old versions and keep the latest one (5.0 Upd. 10.)

On a regular user PC one Java Runtime Environment is enough.

But:

If you have installed an older Version last you could destroy your java integration to the browser, so the best way is to remove all of them and then install the latest version from http://java.sun.com (if you need it).

Good Luck

If you have more than 1 java ie 1.4.2 & 5.0 it can slow some apps down(the ones that use it) - remove them all - and then reboot - install 5.0 update 11 from www.java.com - but having all these on together should not pose a problem - but if you want to remove any do as above. Do not just remove the earliest ver ie 1.4.2

Absolutely none of them are required for the "computer" to run. You can safely uninstall them. But hey, if you uninstall them you'll be unable to run java applications and applets found on various websites. These applets include chat applets, sending receiving SMS applets and various others. If you don't use applets, then you might consider uninstalling them.

They are not required for a Windows based computer to run.

You need Java, and its updates to run java applets which can run independently of the internet but tend to be used on websites. To answer if you need them really depends on what applications you have installed on your computer and what websites you run. But just to run your computer, they are not required.
