Yes, the interview is mandatory. With good documentation and supporting evidence ther emay not be a need for a secondary interview I would think.

I was married to a US citiz. and moved from Canada to the US in 1995. I filed a I -485 and DID have an interview. Wife was required to be at interview as well. Better hurry I-485 goes from $325 to $900 April 1, 2007.

Totally. However, if you came on K1 visa, and your case was transfered to California SC for faster processing - Good chances they will waive interview. (But that meas you had a good evidence once applying for K1, e.g. pictures with relatives both sides, and long history of relationship).
