It depends on the school.
At my high school, it was anything below a 70.
I suggest you check your school's handbook.
But I'm fairly sure that a 57 will be an F

It really depends on the grading scale that your school is using. The standard scale is:
90-100 = A
80-90 = B
70-80 = C
60-70 = D
<60 = F
So a 57 would be an F, sorry.
However, some classes use a "Curve" where the exact grading scale is based on how the class does as a whole, and on that scale, a 57 may not be too bad.

Depends, are you referring to college or intermediary school.
In some classes at any university, a 57 is a passing grade "C" typically this holds true for required classes that are tough "Phys 201, ENME 202" for example. For classes that are important that you have a thurough knowledge of depending on your major, then chances are you will need a 70+ to pass.

Most generally, 59 and below is an F. However, I did take a class once where failing was at 37 percent.

When I was in scholl , anything less that 70 is a failing grade.
