Where did the halo originate? Where there different colours or designs of/in it to signify anything?

Thanks!

It's the sun-disk of Ra. Holy figures in many mid-eastern religions often have a circle behind their head to symbolise the Sun-God, this was transplanted onto Christianity.

There have never been any colours, it is always gold when possible, as it is a sun-symbol. Sometimes it has a cross through it, particuarly in Iranian religions such as Zoroastrianism and Mithraism. This has no special significance either; it may be to encourage association with the mandala, or it may be a wheel, as in some religions in the region the sun was pulled by a celestial chariot.

i suspect that there is a link between halos and auras
it is well known amongst those who see auras that the more enlightened a person is , the bigger and brighter the aura
as some mentioned this pre dates Christianity
