Our Pastor is insistant that we find sponsors that are of the same Christian denomination as us. Additionally, these sponsors need to be responsible Christians; ones that attend church regularily.

Our problem is that the couple who we really want to be our child's sponsors were confirmed in our denomination, but they currently attend a different denominatial church...and that is not good enough, says our Pastor. It's bothersome to me that we can't just have solid, good Christians to be our child's sponsors, irregardless of their denomination.

What's your opinion?

We belong to the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS). Is this an issue in other denominations???

My parents are in the Missouri synod too. Their pastor is great. I am catholic and he visited us in the hospital when our kids were born. I am sure he doesn't feel the same way about the god parent thing.

It needs to be people who have your child's best interest at hand. They are there to make sure you are raising your children in a christian home. But to me, it isn't about them, it is about the child and having him/her baptized. Why must these churches fight parents' decisions?

Maybe the pastor can meet your couple and discuss the issues around being a godparent with them. Then he can see that the couple is just perfect for the honor.

I am God parent to my neice and she is Catholic and I am not
I made a promise to raise her in her religion should anything happen to her parents ( I am not Catholic )
that is what should be required of God parents
your church seems a little stiffled in my opinion and I am not sure i would want my child baptised in one like this ... although if you like your church then i do appologise ... I am not sure how you are going to get around this other than go elsewhere

Chose someone you feel comfortable with, someone you trust and love. Someone around your own age. It does not have to be family. Just people whom you think would love and care for your child as you would.
