This led to an argument last weekend and I can't find any rules posted anywhere. I was waiting with two other guys to play a 9 hole course and it was a pretty busy day so there was a line of about 12 people waiting to tee off on hole #1. Right before my group was up the threesome that had just finished #9 went right up to the tee box like they were next. Their argument was that if you're playing 18, you get to jump in line and tee off on 1, like your '10th' hole. Our argument was that we had already been waiting an hour and there were 12 other people waiting as well (at the time it would have gotten dark too, and we never would have finished 9 if we waited any longer). I asked the guy to show me where this rule was posted. We took it up with clubhouse and they told us we could go ahead, but somehow that group got to go behind us. This doesn't make any sense to me, if you're going to try to play 18 on a 9 hole course it seems you should jump in the back of the line when you get to #1.

First of all in that situation there should be a ranger directing flow. But in general the group coming off of the 9th green should have the right of way. Alternating like you did is very reasonable. But it seems like that is poor mangement on behalf of the course.

I don't think there is an official rule but at many clubs including the ones I play at there are signs stating"Players coming off 9th green have right away on the 10th tee. I think it basic courtesy. Put your self in their shoes, you wouldn't want to be penalized for getting to the course early and starting earlier...

I am not sure this any written rule, but at the one club I play that is 9 holes. The rule is when you come off the 9th hole, you get to alternate in. So I guess that was what the threesome was trying to do. Hope it didn't screw over your round.

Alternating seems like the common sense thing to do. This is why I hate playing on 9 hole courses on the weekends.

it's always been my experience at the golf course that the group with the lowest number of people in it tees first. that or you line up in the order you arrive in. the gorup playing 18 shoul've had to wait their turn. otherwise wouldn't everyone say they're playing 18 holes????
