if you are taking pain medications chronically, your pain tolerance will become decreased. example, a little pain for someone who doesn't take pain medication chronically may be an off the scale pain to someone who does.

if you keep self medicating for infections, without consulting with your doctor and having him run the appropriate tests, it's the microorganisms that evolve and develop a resistance to the antibiotic. if the evolved microorganism infects other people, they'd have to take a stronger type of antibiotic. the stronger the medicine, the worst damage it can cause to the body's liver and kidneys.

Tolerance is a complex subject. It doesn't occur uniformly across all medications nor with all people. Certain generalisations are valid for example, almost all addicts who use so-called recreational drugs will experience tolerance in an effort to recapture initial elusive high. That is the model for 'tolerance'. Also, drugs for neurological disorders such as Parkinson's and epilepsy can induce tolerance. Whether or not many or most drugs do is uncertain. Many people for example can take 5-10 mg diazepam for sleep every night for years without encountering any tolerance. Impossible to generalise in every case.

Yep, That's why doctors will tell you to switch up occasionally and to seek medical care for any thing which requires repeated treatment with over the counter drugs. You can also fall into a cycle where NOT taking a drug will cause to suffer the symptoms. This happens to a lot of migraine sufferers who try to self medicate. Also some medications can build up in your system and cause a whole new set of problems.

Sure--I take medicine for epilepsy, and they had to adjust it many times or change medication because my body developed a tolerence and either I needed higher doses or it just didn't work anymore.
