has this increased? - are there any recorded statistics? - is this a growing trend?

In 2004, 4.5m bikes were sold in the UK

The number of cyclists is hard to pin down. a lot will be determined by the definition of a cyclist.

Of the estimated 60.2 million population mid 2005 only about 16 trips per person per year where estimated.

My interpretation most of the population could ride, have ridden in the past, but don't now. If your going to class everyone who could ride a bike as a cyclist. Well over 95 %(57M) . If your only talking active cyclists probably 10-15 million.(based on 2-3 times the number of bikes sold.)

how big is the universe?!!? You can't ask that question it's inaccurate. I might start cycling tomorrow if I wanted to - there the number has increased.... How the hell would anyone know??? the Government? I could smuggle a bike into the country without anyone knowing.....
I dont think anyone is counting of late

i have no idea how many there are in the uk, but have you ever been to malaysia? i went there last april and stayed in kuala lumpur on the way to australia and i've never seen so many push bikes and motorbikes in my life! have you heard that katie melua song? there really are 9 million bicycles in beijing!

this is a broad question... the estimates are by the tens of thousands in the cities, and more in rural areas...

you may want to specify what you are looking for (types of bikes, areas where ridden, etc.)
