Couple months back I went through my clinical rotation for my Phlebotomy program and saw some rather questionable activities. I got in touch with a couple different groups and ended up getting a couple Phlebotomists fired due to unsafe practices.

I am working for the hospital were this occured- no one knows I did it, but I feel guilty, because now everyone is mad at the person that altered their practices.

Should I feel bad? I mean, I did this for the health and safety of others, is in doing that I think I did right, but these people lost their jobs.

I reported some poor practice through the proper channels and a couple of investigators showed undercover to have blood taken.

When the activities were observed- the Phlebotomist was about to stick the investigator with a needle, the investigator stopped the proceedure and informed the phlebotomist who they were and why they were there.

I feel badly for my part in getting people fired, but I keep telling myself that the phlebotomist did it to themselves.

Course I still feel badly for the people that got fired.

If you acted in good conscience and reported practices that could endanger people's health, then you did the right thing morally and ethically. Just by reporting what you saw you are not responsible for the value judgment that these people were in the wrong. If the people left resent changing bad habits then that is a reflection of their character not yours. You have nothing to feel guilty of. As a matter of fact when we see wrong doing and fail to report it to the proper authorities we become an accessory to the activity. I would like working with you because your actions have proven you to be an honorable person.

Don't feel guilty. I commend you!!!

Standing up for ethics is a hard thing to do but you did the right thing.

The ones that are mad are not people I would be concerned about. You should be proud that you had the courage to say something. Most people would look the other way.

It's not like you are a painter that saw someone cutting corners, you are in the health care industry. Your ethics and practices should be impeccable. If not, you should be working somewhere else.

I am a massage therapist and recently worked as an instructor at a school where the admissions reps were lying and misleading potential students just to get more enrollments. I had to leave because the school wouldn't fix the problem.

Don't share your actions with your coworkers but when you see something wrong make sure you document it.

No you should not feel bad! They should feel bad and get their practices up to date and safe for the public. They have a choice of whether to carry out good practice methods or bad, if they choose bad then they take the consequences and are entirely responsible for that.

If they were putting the patients in danger by not using standard practices, then they needed to be reeducated or they needed to go. How would you feel if you said nothing and a patient was injured?

Sounds like you acted ethically. It sucks that some people are self-destructive, but all you can do is try to minimize their danger to others.
