benzoyle peroxide helps some
Proactive is expensive, at least for my pocket book.
Clean & Clear astringents and Neutrogena Multi Vitamin Acne Treatment have salicylic acid in them, which I think is the active ingredient in Proactive. I believe they are cheaper and you can find them at Walmart, you used to have to send out for Proactive.
As far as your habit-clean your face in the morning and at night.
Set a time limit for brushing teeth, washing and applying meds, whatever is necessary and then leave when your time is up. Do not allow enough time to pick and pop, just leave the mirror when the time is up. And stay away from the mirror the rest of the day.

You didn't say how you were popping them, but here's how I did it when I was a teenager. It never made them worse, although new ones kept coming. If you're already doing this to minimize the possibility of spreading it or making them worse you can ignore this. First, assess how "ripe" the pimple is. If there's an obviously raised, well defined white spot, it's ready and you probably don't need a pin. If it's just barely raised and feels like it's not quite at the surface, it's almost ready and you can probably pop it with the aid of a pin. If it's red only, or red with only a very tiny white spot in the middle, it's not ready, wait another day or so before popping it. If you want to use a pin, sterilize it by holding it in a candle or lighter flame for a second, or by dipping it in isopropanol for a second or two. DON'T use a pin if the pimple is near your eyes, it is not worth the risk! If the pimple is on the margin of your lips, you almost have to use a pin, it will be very painful to pop that pimple but it will be much more painful without a pin. Don't jab the pin straight down into the pimple, instead, hold the pin just above parallel to the skin, and poke it gently through the side of the pimple, into the white spot. (If the pimple is on the margin of your lips, point the pin toward your lips for less pain.) Now, wash both hands with soap and get ready to do the popping. Don't squeeze the pimple between thumb and forefinger, this is more painful than it needs to be. Use both forefingers instead. While looking in the mirror, place one forefinger, the tip angled somewhat toward your skin, on each side of the pimple, with the hole you made with the pin on one side, pointing directly at the end of your fingernail. The ends of your fingernails should touch your skin right next to the pimple on both sides. Ideally, the pimple should be over a part of your face where there is a hard bone directly underneath. If it is not, try to use your fingers to move the skin around until it is. If your skin is not flexible enough don't worry about it. With your two fingers, press down (directly into the skin) first, putting pressure around the pimple, then press your two fingers toward each other, putting pressure under the pimple. The white goo should pop out of the pinhole and it should all be collected by one of your fingernails, so that it cannot spread the infection. Wash it off, then soap the area around the pimple just to be safe. If you try to pop it and only a very thin, clear, watery fluid comes out, it probably wasn't ripe enough. Try it again in another day if it's still there. If it bleeds a little after you pop it, a little square of toilet paper should fix it (treat it as a shaving cut.) If you hear a pop or a snap but nothing comes out, then you have just popped it under the skin and that pimple WILL get worse. This can happen if you try to pop a pimple that isn't ripe, or if you try one that isn't quite ripe without using a pin.

Imagine you in a few years in your adult life where your face is now being used as a 3 D map of the potholes in your community, or worse, the next lunar landing point for NASA. But I really think that you've got a masochistic streak.

Picking and popping definitely leaves scars. There are a lot of OTC medicines and treatments you could try that would be much more productive.

You just have to stop. Its just like any other habit you just have to decide you're done and stop. Do something else to take your mind off it. Play a game or do some push ups.
