There is
The Navy a part of which is the Marine Corp ( somebody has to take care of them when they are hurt or when they need to get somewhere or when the shore bombardment before they land and provide most of their air cover or who remove all the bobby traps for before they land done by UDTs/SEALs)
The Army
The Air Force
and than the Coast Guard in time of war they go under the Navy but now part of Homeland Security.
Now you have Reserves
They are Navy, Army, Air Force, Marine Corp, Coast Guard
Next you have the National Guard that is Army and Air Force and the do a double duty to the states and than to the country.
If want a step out farther is the Civil Air Patrol.
It all depends how far apart you want to go.

Political Wrong listed the following in his answer:
Army
Navy
Air Force
Marine's
Coast Guard
Merchant Marines
My addition is: Is it possible that the source you read might have considered the National Guard as a seperate entity from the Army thereby creating a 7th branch of the military?
I'm just grasping at straws here people...

You might be confusing "military branches" with "uniformed services" that includes Surgeon Genera/Dept of Health, NOAA, and perhaps others in addition to the Army, USAF, USN and Coast Guard. (Marines are part of the Department of the Navy; the best part they would say!) Since Coast Guard is now under Homeland Security, I'm not sure how to count them. Nothing is simple anymore.

The Air tension has been final the bigger remote places bases for years and reducing the dimensions of others. It truly is predicated upon your AFSC. once you're a scientific technician, you will be stationed fairly plenty everywhere as they a minimum of have a small hospital for base workers. in spite of if once you're a jet engine mechanic engaged on the B2, there is approximately one base which you will be assigned to and that's in Kansas. in case you extremely need to get stationed remote places, get a replica of the Air tension magazine undertaking that lists each and all of the bases or you are able to attempt a google seek. then you definately can look up the bases that activity you and notice what they have there. then you definately can %. an AFSC that serves at that base. as far by way of fact the different centers, the comparable factor applies. connect the army or Marines and you will see Afghanistan. on the different hand, Marines are the guards at each and all of the US embassies so as that could provide you the desirable risk of seeing different worldwide places. you merely must be picked to be an embassy safeguard.

In the United States of America we have one Department of Defense (USDoD), three departments of military administration(DoA, DoAF, and DoN), and four branches of military service (US Army, US Air Force, US Navy, and US Marine Corps). Other agencies may stand alongside these four, but, there are only four branches of military service.

Military
---------
Navy
Army
Air Force
Marines (It might be funded by the Navy, and "officially" part of the Navy; I dont consider it as anything like the Navy)
Homeland Security
-------------------------
Coast Guard
There are 4 Military branches, and the Coast Guard is its own thing; which is argueable.
