i know he says b/c it will reduce our energy consumption. i realize that in the winter months people consume more energy. but, how does moving the clock fool that consumption? the day length is the same. the temperature outside is the same. surely i'm missing something? oh all-knowing Answerers, please enlighten me!

if the clock is moved ahead, and we get up sooner, wouldn't we consume energy longer (by an hour)?

On average people consume more energy in the evening than in the morning. By setting daylight savings time earlier in the year, afternoon daylight will be extended by one hour eliminating the need for people to use their lights as much.

As for how it saves energy, I've never known.
