If so, where and would you recommend the store or a specific salesperson? We're not looking to break the bank here, just a carat.

my fiance got my ring at www.bluenile.com. They let you design the stone shape and setting and the prices are really affordable.

I went to L Wilmington's in downtown LA (on wilshire). I got a 3 stone in white gold. Middle is about 3/4 carats, both sides are between 1/3 & 1/2 carats, plus 6 paves down each side, G color, VS1 clarity. It was $4,300 total. I figured I'd get what I wanted since this is my first marriage and I'm 41. Most of the Jewelry mart is pretty reliable to purchase from. Make sure they show you the stones seperately against a piece of white paper and that the store is brightly lit. This will really show you the difference in color and make sure you check the inclusions too. Remember if they try and push you to purchase, go somewhere else. You shouldn't feel pressured to purchase anything.

Congrats and good luck!!

Go to Robbin's Brothers! They're the biggest & best. They have several stores in the Southland - one I used was in Torrance area.

I've also had good luck with buying on-line with www.ice.com
but I think for a wedding/engangement ring I'm planning on wearing every day forever, I'd want to see it in person, as the size is hard to tell on the internet.

I would never purchase a ring online.

I want to hold that ring in my hot little hands and go over it with a jeweler's loop. I want to feel the weight of it in my hand and on my finger.

Ask some older women for their recommendations, some women who have jewelry that you admire. Don't ask anyone under 35, unless they are royalty it takes a bit longer to accumulate a taste for jewelry, an eye for good stones, and the pieces that are worth owning.
