I just adopted a small dog and brought him home. He was abused and I knew he would have some trouble adjusting but he took to me and my roommate very well. The only thing is that he is a gift for my mom and when I let her see him he was very nervous and hid from her. When she tried to take him for a walk he got aggressive and growled at her and tried to bite her. She really wants a dog and she absolutely loves him but she cant get close to him. I dont know what to do. I dont want to take him back because he might be put to sleep, can anyone help me? How can I get him used to my mom so that he can be the companion she needs and he can get the love and attention he needs?

First things first, think safety. Get him a mesh muzzle. They are soft and will not harm him. If he will let you put it on him start there. Then place some beans or pennies in a soup can and tape a piesce of paper to the top with them in it. Its a shaker. The next step is to have your mom come into a large room with you beside him. Have her start out from a distance and walk closer a step or two at a time. If he doesn't react negatively, praise him. If he does react negatively, shake the can near him and tell him no. When he calms down have her progress again and repeat for the appropriate actions. If your mom is able to get anywhere near him. Have her just sit near him at first, if he does ok with it she can progress to touching him but tell her not to look at him for now. It is a gradual process and may take up to a week to do before he acts appropriately on his own. If at any point during the training he remains agressive acting, stop the training and resume later. Do it a couple of times a day if possible. Good luck and hope it helps.

Slapping, spraying water, and sending him in an open section including a basket or backyard does no longer consistently paintings, it could even make concerns worse. He ought to easily be protecting you that's organic. i could propose getting a cage kennel save it so that's elementary movable. while he starts off growling place him interior the kennel. If that still would not paintings in simple terms positioned him exterior and save him in a fence or an invisible fence A.ok.A ask your self collar. Comes with a distant besides and with that each and each time he does something out of hand or acts up you grants him a lite ask your self. No that may no longer animal cruelty, in actuality countless human beings which comprise some officers even use that technique besides as a results of fact the kennel technique.

Because the dog was abused, your mom may remind him of his abuser. Allow her to come over and see him EVERYDAY so he gets used to her. She needs to get down to his level with treats in her hand so he realizes she is not a threat. Tell her to look directly at him in his eyes so he will realize that she has dominance over him as well as trying to be his friend. She also needs to be careful, you need to be behind the dog with it on a very loose leash, you dont want him to feel like he is being cornered, but you want to be able to stop him in case he tries to bite.

Maybe he was abused by women so he doesn't take kindly to them. Don't rush into anything. baby steps. It might never work between the dog and your mom.

She may remind him of the person that abused him. He may never get used to her. There's really nothing you can do.
