You either A.) Did not let the butter soften to room temperature before using, or B.) Did not remove them from the cookie sheet after baking to cool on a rack, this means they continued cooking while on the hot cookie sheet. There are only a few things I can suggest you try, store them in an air tight container with a piece of bread or apple chunks. If they are still hard in the morning, place them uncovered in the microwave, with a mug of boiling water, then heat on LOW (do not use high heat, your microwave should have a power level button so you can adjust it, use number 3) check every 30 seconds to see if they are soft, time depends on how hard they are and how many cookies you have. I hope they soften for you.

Butter or Margarine must be at natural room temperature. If you soften by heating, cookies will be too hard when cool.
2) Coarse brown sugar controls spreading of cookies, More coarse (brown) sugar equals more spread. More fine sugar (white granulated) equals less spread. But 2 cups combined is max.
3) To soften hard dry cookies put the in a sealed container with a piece of bread or apple.
4) If you're like me, you want results instantly! Put cookies (uncovered) in microwave along with a mug of uncovered hot water. Uselow heat setting for several minutes; check after a minute or so. Time depends on amount of cookies.
5) I have had very good results when I put a chunk or two of apples in the cookie storage container. It's quick and easy. I don't wait until they get hard; if it's a recipe that I want to stay moist I just add the apple when I take the cookies out of the oven and first store them.
6) If your stored cookies have gotten too crisp for your liking, put them in a plastic bag with a piece of fresh bread. The next day you will have soft cookies again.

Sometimes, the cookies are so old that even microwaving them will not work. Also, the apple and bread methods often make the cookies taste old and stale. In this case, the best method to soften the cookies is to sprinkle them with plenty of hot milk. This will soften them up. You cannot turn old cookies into fresh cookies but you can turn hard cookies into tasty cookies.

My mom always used a piece of apple. Just cut a slice and put it in the contianer and the moisture of the apple softens the cookies. It works but I found there's a taste of apple on the cookies, of course after the second cookie, I didn't mind so much.

put a soft piece of bread into the bag with the cookies. the cookies will absorb the moisture in the bread.
I've tried it a couple of times, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. it depends on how hard the cookies are.

YES, i have the same problem all the time but maybe next time you could try and take your cookies out a bit early maybe that would help a little.
