Why EDX SEM needs liquid nitrogen?

What is the purpose of the liquid nitrogen in a scanning electron microscope with EDX system?

The detector for the EDX system needs to be cooled to reduce the noise. Otherwise, there would be so much noise that you wouldn't be able to detect the signal.
