This means "genetically modified". One example is bt corn which has a gene that causes the corn to produce an insecticidal chemical. The gene was obtained from a bacterium and put into the corn.

A GM crop is a crop of say cereal, wheat etc., which has been genetically modified. GM is used to speed up the process of improving the quality and cropping load of certain crops. Most GM crops are more resistant to disease and attacks by pests.
Here in UK there is widespread disapproval of GM crops. This has encouraged more people to guy organic foods.

GM = Gentically modified.
The genome (all the DNA of the organism) is altered by added a gene from another organism. This new gene normally encodes for something benficial for the plant. For example much research has gone into producing gentically modified plants to feed the starving and malnourished individuals in developing countries. Genes that encode for high levels of vitamins to be produced have been added to the genome of rice plants so that people that eat them will get more vitamins etc than eating the normal rice plant.
Another common gentically modified trait is to add a gene that encodes for resistance against pests so no pesticides would be need. However this brings up the debate that although no pesticide will be used (it will be organic) it will be gentically modified. Which is worse?
The study of genetically modified organisms is often referred to as biotechnology and involves research into however mixing genomes around can have beneficial effects.

GM is short for Green Manure, which would be something like a rye grass which is tilled back into the earth where it decomposes and releases it's nutrients into the soil. It's pretty much as organic as it gets. There are several green manure crops Legumes are a popular variety since they take nitogen from the air and fix it on smales nodes on the roots =thus making it available in the soil.

soya is probably the most imported crop into the uk mainly from the u.s.that is g.m .The idea behind G M is to grow plants resistant to disease therefore not having to use pesticides and fungicides to help them to grow also the big seed manufacturers are pushing hard for it so they can control the seeds market by designing wheat ,barley that produces a grain that won,t germinate so the farmer has to buy new seed every year not being able to grow his own.The main concern with genetically modified crops is the unknown effect it will have on nature

A crop plant that has had its genes modified. And I don't mean like when you bleach your Levis to make them looked faded, and therefore more trendy!
