Actually they are not the same thing. Windows Update is just what it sounds like and is a program for checking if Microsoft has released any patches to vulnerabilities discovered in your operating system or any of it's components. Microsoft Update is the new improved version which checks and patches not only your operating system but all of your Microsoft Office products as well.
