Has anyone ever had a similar situation? I called the company and asked them and they said it was very possible because the hard drive runs 24-7. Now we are stuck with this stupid thing for a year.

It is impossible for the power bill to go up that much just because of the satellite I have 2 and you can't even tell any difference in the bill. You more than likely have a problem with some other appliance in the home causing the increase. Check your water heater, furnace, dryer, and oven all of these run off of 220 volts and consume massive amounts of electricity. The older the appliance is the more power they use. Check with the power co and they can give you a better idea on what each ones cost usage would be. Example: A 45 min. hot shower would cost you about a $1.00
Also if the quick recovery element on your water heater is shorted or burned out it will be using electricity constantly (wasting) but the water will still be hot just not as hot as it should be and will run out faster. It is more than likely that it is only a coincidence to have happened with the satellite installation.

My satellite receiver says it uses 45 watts. If your electric rate is around 15 cents per kilowatt hour, that woud be 45 watts time 24 hours/day times 30 days/month divided by 1000. This is 45 X 24 X 30 / 1000 X .15 = $4.86 per month.

You can check your electric bill for your exact kwh rate. Then check the back of your box and see how many watts it says it uses. Do the math and see if it comes anywhere close to the increase in your bill.

I do turn my satellite box off when I am not watching TV, not that I think that makes much difference.

If you have electric heat, my guess is that when they installed the dish and the cable down to the satellite box by your TV, they didn't seal the hole and you have a heat leak. Check and see where the cable goes and feel around it for any cool air. They might also have disturbed some insulation in your attic.
