I'm thinking of hand raising a pigeon, I plan to get one from a friend later on this year. I've done my research and have a few basic supplies.

But does anyone have any tips for hand raising?

Go to this site: http://www.birdtricks.com/training_parrots.htm. It may or may not help. It is a great site for any problems or questions for birds. Also call a breeder and google the question. Thanks for asking. Hope this helps. =)

well, first off, the guy that left the first comment is a complete ***. i cant believe he would be so mean!
anyway, on to your question. hand feeding a bird can be extremely tricky. there are many many mistakes that you could make that will cost you the life of your little friend. ill give you some tips but leave it up to you wether or not you want to risk it.

the first thing you want to consider is the future of the bird. many of the bacteria that prevent sickness in a bird are passed on from the parents. if you can, let the parents feed it for about 5 days. they will regurgitate the food and important bacteria into the baby and he will be protected from then on.

the second thing is, do you have the time to do hand feeding every 2-5 hours for a month? its a huge commitment.

the third is how will you take it if you accidentally kill your bird? there are three pipes in the back of a bird's throat- which one do you put the food in? if you choose wrongly, the bird will die a slow and painful death, drowning in his food.

ive seen many people hand feed birds (im an avian medicine major in college right now.) but ive never tried it myself and dont know if i could take the responsibility of having his tiny life in my hands.

if you still want to do it, ive listed a couple of sites below, the second one being specific to pigeons.
good luck with your little one!

You might try calling a bird shop or emailing someone on the web that specializes in hand feeding and rearing pigeons.

A one hundred watt pink warmth bulb is sturdy for the warmth resource. they prefer water and a chick starter feed 24/7, I desire the disintegrate. I initiate feeding them pellets at 2 weeks and upload further and further as they consume it. I supply much less and much less starter till it particularly is used up. Feed them some grit from the feed keep. I constantly tension feed mine 3-5 grits or small stones the size of a rice grain and positioned them separate till ultimately all get some. it particularly is to guarantee me that each and each chick has grit interior the gizzard. I positioned information paper in a extensive cardboard field and hang the warmth bulb low adequate for the right temp around the peak of their head. it particularly is a speedy answer so in case you prefer extra e-mess me by clicking the Charles D M.

My advice is unless your parents know about this plan, DON'T DO IT!

Less than a month ago you were asking how to raise a bird without your parents knowing. That tells me that you don't have the health and welfare in mind for this bird. You can't take care of one properly without them knowing.
