I like Doreen Blumenfeld (I think that's her name) - Journey into Healing Light. It's a little bit hokey, but it has helped me sleep and decompress.

The Beginner's Guide to Insight Meditation,
By: Arinna Weisman and Jean Smith, is an excellent book which teaches insight meditation, loving-kindness meditation,
and mindfulness meditation {mindfulness of
Breathing) It also explains the 4 Noble Truths and The Noble Eight-fold Path of Buddhism as well. Anything by these two authors is excellent.

Also below, if you simply click, is a excellent site providing information on learning meditation from 37 sites. Check some of them out and see which is most helpful to you.

Vinslave already suggested a popular, well
know site, which many start out using,
Buddhanet.net She is correct, one does not have to be a Buddhist, to learn, practice, and receive the many benefits from meditation.

If you do a Google search for Swami Muktananda you will find countless books by him for meditation beginners. Some are out of print but you can get them on eBay. S.M. was a remarkable, highly respected meditation master and teacher and had such immense power that you would readily enter into meditation just by being in his presence. I found no other yoga or meditation path offered so uniquely helpful and easy to master meditation techniques. Also, even reading his books is equally powerful - many people have reported how they would spontaneously have meditative experiences simply by reading them or seeing his videos. There are also CD's available. His ashrams and meditation centers are widely spread throughout USA and in many other countries. If you check online you will be able to locate one near you.

Check out the Buddhist website Buddhanet.net... the simple meditation where you focus on the breath only, should help you clear your mind and let it rest... you don't have to become Buddhist to derive benefit from it either.
