Im 39 weeks pregnant, and due any day now, and we just found out again that our oldest cat has round worms, the ones from ingesting flea eggs, the vet didnt believe us, and we brought him in and sure enough he did, but were all baffeled, because in the past year including some of 2006, he has had them about 5 times, now both cats are on Advantage, so that the fleas are gone, and on top of that they get a bath with flea shampoo every other week, so what could we be doing wrong??? why does this cat keep getting them??? i mean, i cant bring a baby home to a house that house this infestation, sorry i feel horriable, is there anything i can do to get rid of the worms with out getting rid of the cat???

If he got them from fleas you must be talking Tapeworms right?
If so you may need to go to Revival Animal online and get the 800# and call them I have found that they are very knowledgable and they deal with mostly farmers and breeders that tend to treat things themselves. I have a kennel and when I am in need of meds and advice I go to them and they tell me what works and what does not. Then they sell you the meds at a fraction of the cost. If you have the meds on hand and begin to treat regularly it will work.

Advantage, like Frontline, doesn't always work well on fleas. Revolution is the best choice. Use Capstar to kill as many as possible in 24 hours. Do some housekeeping - getting clothes and papers off the floor etc. And buy a new litterbox and new litter. This will take care of any infestation in the box. Also put down some powder that u can vaccum on the carpet for fleas. But most importantly, I'd get a different vet, because apparently his medication isn't working and he isn't trying something different to solve this problem. Worms CAN be difficult though. Good luck.

Tapeworms come from fleas. Roundworms come from cats ingesting the eggs (i.e. eating something they caught that had the eggs in them, like a mouse). If your cats are outside/inside cats, that could be the problem.

It it's tapeworms and not rounds, your house might be infested with fleas and somehow the cats are ingesting them whether they're on their skin for a short period of time and just happened to be licked up before the Advantage can kill them.

The medicine should work, but both cats have to be treated , because the feces could have the eggs in them and if one cat uses the litterbox and steps in the feces and then ingests it, they are reinfected all over again.

Drontal or Strongid are the two medicines the doctor prescribes at our clinic. They usually work without a problem. But like I said, both must be treated.

If they are tapeworms which look like rice in their poo, The first round of meds may not have knoced them all out which would cause a recurrence. If they are the round worms that look like a spaghetti noodle in the poo, in some cases (especially with dogs), they are in the muscle fibers and as the cat grows, the eggs are able to release and move to the intestines to mature. If that's the case, you will have to de-worm it monthly. Especially being a soon to be new moomy, PLEASE make sure you do not do anything with the litter box regarless of if the cat continues to have worms or not. Especially if you plan to breast feed, don't touch the box until you are finished breast feeding. Women can get an illness called toxoplasmosis from cleaning the litter box which can cause severe problems to baby.

Did you get medicine from the vet? My cats had this 3 times. Every time the vet gave them pills. You have to keep the litter box EXTREMELY clean. Your cat might be re-infecting itself due to the litter box. We had to scoop the boxes 3 times a day and I can't even count the amount of litter we went through. It's a pain, but it might help.

Well roundworms do not come from fleas. Tapeworms do. So your need to make sure you are getting the correct dewormer.
