My son is starting pre-k in the fall, and I'd like to know what I can do to prepare him. The plan is to do school shopping a little at a time as not to overwhelm him, and to visit his school and meet his teacher early and frequently. Maybe take him to the school and let him play on the playground if the school allows. Maybe late July we'll start "practicing" the schedule we'll have in the morning to get ready.

But as far as academics go, I'm sure he'll need to know how to write his name. But will he need to know ALL the letters of the alpabet and what they look like and what sounds they make? He can sing the alphabet song and pick out the letters in his name, but he doens't know the rest. He can count to 10, he knows his colors and shapes. Is there anything else? Will the school let me know what is expected of him before he starts, and will they let me know with enough advance so I can hurry and teach him what he doesn't yet know?

Thanks!

Kids entering Pre-K come in at all different levels. Some don't know the letters of their names and some are reading. The Pre-K should let you know if there is anything that is imperative for him to know, but most likely as long as he is potty trained (you'd be surprised how many children aren't!) and is OK socially then most likely he will be fine. He sounds like he's running about average right now. If you keep working with him over the summer on his letters (don't push too hard), and keep reading him books he should be fine.
Talk to the teachers about what they like the children to be doing before they enter, pre-schools will differ as will teachers.

Relax. it is pre-k, preschool. Nothing is expected of him, but to be kind to others & respect others. Its great if he knows, letters, or name, but no none of it necessary, some will know letters, & write them others, not a clue. It will all be taught to him. They are starting w/ basics. so again relax. Here is the basics, just talk about the school. Talk about what he'll be doing. What the day will be like. That is all you have to do. Dont be overwhelming him w/ letters, & 3's, youll put too much pressure on him.

Just teach manners & kindess, which i am sure he has. All you need to do is talk about it. He'll be fine, all kids have gone to preschool & are great, so will he. stop worrying, he'll manage fine!

Pre-K kids need to count past 10. One of the things they are tested on for kindergarden readiness is if they can count to 100.
Yes he will need to learn/know all of the alphabet, (not just the song), write name, define shapes and symbols.
Pre-K is for 4 and 5 year olds. Usually by age 3 children know the alphabet and how to count past 10. What have you been doing?

stop - relax - breathe.
There is no need to CRAM for preschool. let them do their job, and you keep doing the job of beng a great parent.

If you have read to him from day one, allowed him to observe the world around him and learn from his, and your, mistakes, he'll be more than fine.

I have two sons, one in K and in preschool and am an Elementary teacher.

Sounds like YOU need to get ready for preschool more than he does, lol.

smile. your baby is growing up!
