It depends. Did you buy the poison? If you don't know what kind of poison it was, that observe your cat and check out the litter box. If s/he is listless, or if her stool looks different, you should call your vet and describe what happened. If you have a good vet, they'll tell you whether or not it sounds serious. Don't forget to take a stool sample if you need to go to the vet. It won't matter if it's covered in cat litter.

But you might not need to do that. What kind of poison was it? Go back and check the box. If it was specially formulated rat poison, then what it actually contains is chemicals designed to disrupt the mouse's ability to absorb water, so the mouse actually dies of dehydration, rather than a poisonous chemical. If that's the type of poison you have, then it won't harm your cat.

If the mouse ate enough poison it can poison the cat also. You should probably call a vet or poison control. It may be that the leathal dose for the mouse is not enough to effect the cat, just depends on the poison you used. The poison packaging might have a 1-800 number to call also.

The cat may get sick and could die as well. Take it to a vet along with any information about the poison you may have. Basically, the cat ingests the poisoned mouse and the poison then enters the cat's system when the mouse is digested.

We had a cat die because of this. Use mouse traps with the tape or let your cat catch poison free mice.

My cats wont eat something that is dead already. We killed some gophers around the house with some poison and my cat would not even touch it. I think they know when something is not good for them to eat, ever wonder why they will eat some plants and not others that are poisonous to them?

Sometimes the cat is poisoned as well. If you suspect that this has happened, you might want to take your cat to the vet.
