so my son tells me he wants to play guitar, hes only 3 yo. i asked him if he knew what a guitar was and he pointed to the poster i have of Brian Setzer. I then went out and bought him a childs toy guitar, and he got upset and said that it was not the real thing. So my question is my son to young to start learning to play guitar? i know it helps a child develop math skills by playing an instrument but is he to young to start playing?

I don't think he's too young. Children begin piano and violin at 4 years old. If your child approached you and expressed an interest, I'd say it's a pretty strong one. You could get in touch with your local community education program and see if they know of a local music teacher who has experience with toddlers. You also might want to look into a group "fun" music program that would help your son develop the basics before getting into one specific instrument. Yes, musical aptitude is said to have a positive impact on mathematical abilities. I would encourage your son's interest if you are able, but maybe make it more of a fun time, not too strict on practicing right now. Good luck!

Yo Dude
This may be a golden opportunity for you to take care of a number of things all at one time ---
If you go the route of getting him a very low cost kids instrument--before you take the plunge-- have a very brief talk with him about responsibility for the care of the guitar-- and let him know that it will mean that he has to take good care of it -- and that if he abuses or mistreats it--- he will NOT get another ---- SO---not only will you be servicing his "creative needs" here and encouraging his learning of what music is about--- but there will be some ground covered on the "responsibility" thing as well !!

Well, obviously since he's three he's far too small to hold the real thing. Also if he's 3 he won't actually be able to learn very well unless he's a musical prodigy. I'd wait a few years, but if he starts that young then he'll have a lot of potential.

Never too young to start playing. Check with Guitar Center and find a children's size guitar. You should be able to get one for fifty to seventy-five dollars.

Encourage him but be careful not to push.

If he is really interested in music, I suggest that you enroll him in Kindermusic.
