Yes the cards that invite you to functions like weddings and birthdays are called invitations.

If the question is "Where to get invitations", it seems like you would know if you are looking for birthday or wedding first but since you aren't picky about birthday invitations or whatever--go into a stationary store like Hallmark. They usually have a good selection. (White pages: stationary)

Party stores, like Party City, Party Town, usually have a ton, along with the napkins, plates, tablecloths you would need. (white pages: party supply store)

There are a lot of bridal shop that have books with wedding invitations. Also, wedding invitations are usually ordered online. Call the numbers in your bridal magazine or google wedding invitations. I suggest going to bridal fairs or www.theknot.com.

You wouldn't spend as much on birthday invitations as you would on wedding (unless you are one of those NTV Super Sweet 16 kids). The reception cards match the invites and are sold together.

You could get blank cards and make your own, at Staples or Office Max. Arts and crafts stores like Michael's have a design your own wedding invites, in the wedding aisle.

Be more specific in your question and perhaps we could actually answer it.
