Just putting together a questionnaire to youth ministers in our area and thought I'd glean some real-life topics/issues here first!--so, thanks for the input!

I agree with Flanker.

You can put together a fun time with songs, games, and activities and never truly impact the youth. There will still be liars, cheaters, fornicators, hateful, depressed, oppressed and etc. You need to do more than entertain to fill seats. I know some churches will fire a youth pastor if they don't get those numbers. Ohhhh, the religious system!

My thoughts would be to separate them into smaller groups with one or two leaders (If you have the ability) and really talk about the scriptures and see if they have any questions.

The Holy Spirit will guide you to tell you what is needed for your particular group of youth kids/teenagers. Remember that monologue does nothing but shut doors.

*Idea: Get a curriculum by John or Lisa Bevere. Watch the DVD's then discuss amongst yourselves. Intimacy with the Holy Spirit is AWESOME...well all their stuff is.

I am not a youth minister and I am not quite sure what you are asking, but, the church I belonged to in High School had a great youth minister. He always, almost every other weekend had something for us to do as a group. That pretty much kept us unified as a group. Kept those who were the trouble seeking kind out of trouble because they always had fun things to do so they didn't go searching for other things. I was an atheist and still am, but I think to run a successful youth program, you must get everybody in the group seeing themeselves as a group. I loved being there because I knew I always had friends, an adult to talk to, and fun things to do. It unified us. That was it's strength. The weakness of the minister was his bombardment of the morals. For instance, his method of telling us that we were wrong to listen to rock music or other things was a bit on the pushy side. Don't do that. That would just make us want that thing more. He would point out flaws like nobodies bussiness. That can drive people away. You must find a delicate balance. For instance, if a youth comes to you and ask about something, give them your opinion and help them how they can reach their goal with being with god, not point out to them at any random time that their music, their dress, their current beliefs are WRONG!!!! Hope this helps.

I think it's being something of a kid yourself. It's also very much NOT being afraid of the really tough questions.

Both of these work very well for me.

I am not a youth minister. But I help out giving a class in prayer every now and then. My friend who is a youth minister invites me in then usually opens the group up to questions.

Kids ask questions. It is not right to ignore the question or pass it off as incorrect even to ask. Take them seriously and they will act seriously. Even the most troublesome kid becomes quite focused when they are taken seriously.

Plain and Simple. You need the Holy Spirit. Think you have got Him? The proof is in the Power. Kids will pick up on fake stuff quicker than most adults. Try selling them religion and they will do what they always have done. Give them the true real 100% Power of God and watch out! Faith with out works is dead and dead just doesn't work.

Are you asking what WE need or what we think YOU'RE going to need? That makes a difference in the responses you're going to get.
