Well, first of all it would depend on her favorite foods, and if I could prepare it. If I couldn't, I'd try to learn how just to surprise her. (And if I could get it within tolerable standards, in case it's something more difficult,lol) If this is for a guy, we're usually pretty easy, it's the meaning and effort behind it that would make the difference. Personally speaking, Italian is always a good choice. I'd plan ahead and ask some of their favorites well in advance as part of just regular conversation then pick from that.

I made mussels( fast and easy to do) with a great garlicky french bread and a creme brulee for dessert
