Why would he think you are a stalker, just walk up and say hi, then start talking about how much science sucks/rocks (depending on whether you like it or not lol) and start talking from there...

Be like a silent assassin, be the bait, just set yourself up for a conversation. Like for example, drop something near him and have him to pick it up, and then you can go from there and see how it goes.
