Contact your local volunteer center to connect you with some of the local community-based agencies in your area.

Volunteer centers provide you with a connection to various non-profit agencies that offer one-time or short-term volunteer projects. My volunteer center works with the parks department to clean our local hiking trails, beaches, etc. My volunteer center recently sponsored a project that cleaned the environment for one of the local endangered birds.

You can also get a referral to a specific agency in your area for longer-term projects.

Good luck!

You can go to your county conservation commission and volunteer, or check with the park district, because they know of people who are looking for people just like you.
Have fun!
