traditionally a dowry is set aside by the brides parents to give to the grooms family upon marriage. a dowry can be anything from money to property to pigs and cows depending on the culture

it depends upon the items. some where kept by the parents, and some were for use by the bride and family. in chinese culture, a dowry often included things like clothes for the bride, quilts and clothing for the family, gifts of food and money were given as well, for use by the brides new family

I think it actually depended on what was given.
The grooms parents were given livestock, the couple livestock or land. Land could have been entitled to the bride and the children.
There were also the gifts for the bride - clothes, things for the house, jewelry.
