I usually wears jeans and a t- shirt and sometimes a t- shirt with a botton up shirt left unbottoned or only partley bottoned so people can see the cool picture. my step mom (actually not yet just my dad's girl friend) wears usually 2 shirts and a sweater. But then when she gets warm she opens the front door which makes me cold. should I be the one to have to go get a nother shirt or sweater or something? Or should she take here sweater off? It currently is only about 40 degrees out side.

Etiquette is the art of making people feel, "Welcome".

So, the gentleman thing to do is to wear a sweater so she can feel comfortable. Sometimes women open doors to get smells out of the house. You might want to find a time when you're neutral about the situation and talk to her in a nice way about why she does this ... for the flip side is that she should be aiming to make you feel comfortable too ---> COMPROMISE.

It's most important to treat our family members (future family members) with MORE etiquette than we give strangers.

Next time she does that, you say "Oh, are you hot? Let's check the thermostat....do we need to turn it down? I guess so, since it would save on the utility bill and we won't have to let all the heat out the front door. Hmmm....now where could we set it that you and me both could be comfortable with? I really hate to add another shirt to the two I'm wearing already....maybe you could try a lighter sweater? What do you think?"

She will get the idea and you won't offend her.

Consider, if you will, that it is possible that she may be getting hot flashes already. Now, how to ask her about that? You can't.
Women even in their thirties can start the "change" and get hot flashes this early.

So, with that in mind, and since we all should be raised to respect our elders, grab a sweater. After the sweater is on, ask if she is still hot and then delicately discuss the thermostat setting. In an ideal world, it is supposed to be set at 68F for heating, 72F for cooling. Most people don't keep theirs set at this, I realize ... but this is the "suggested" settings for being earth conscience. Perhaps you and your family could strive for those two settings.

Go and tell her that you are about to close the door because you are cold. Then offer to open a window or two for her.

Here is a clue. Should the heat be turned up when some people are hot?

The door should be kept shut as she is wasting energy having it open. Why heat the house if the door is open???
