My wife and I are both allergic to shellfish. Should we be concerned that our kids would be allergic as well? I don't want to put the kids through the stress of allergy testing if it isn't absolutely necessary. Kids + lots of little needles = really unhappy kids.

Allergies are not hereditary but the tendency is hereditary. That means that because you and wife have the same allergy does not guarantee that your children will have the shellfish allergy, but they have a much higher of probability that they will have the allergy

It is hereditary but not directly. like if you AND your wife are both allergic to shellfish it doesn't mean the kid is going to be allergic to shellfish even though he will probably be allergic to something else.

not necessarily but usually I wouldn't do the allergy testing unless your Dr recommends it. just watch what they eat and any reactions. remember the first time that they eat something they wont react it is subsequent contacts that the reactions come.
the Dr said to me "with your allergies you were meant for another planet" the allergy shots never did a thing for any one I know just an easy way for some doc to make money. just be careful with the kids and carry allergy meds with you just in case

yes it is hereditary but not always. allergies may be genetic but remember that most people with allergies do not have a proven positive family history.
so chances are your children are fine and it's a big chance! But I would advise you to start with low doses of shellfish just in case!

Absolutely. I wouldn't bother having them tested. Who wants to eat shellfish anyway?

Unfortunately allergies have a tendency to be hereditary.

Our daughter has allergies, and both her father and I have allergies. Hubby has hey fever, asthma and a few mild food allergies, and one known drug allergy. I have major drug, food and chemical allergies, and I have asthma and hey fever too. And our daughter has some food allergies and suffers from hay fever and asthma too.

Be weary with your children, and if they show signs of allergies then have them tested. I would also speak to your doctor and see what they feel, about having your children tested. They feel that it is unecessary unless they show signs of allergies.

Good luck
