Also do they have to be in a pair or can I get just one? If they need to be paired, how do I know which two are an "item" when I buy them?

Parakeets do fine with children as long as the kids don't tease it or try and hurt it, they should do fine. And, no, they do not have to be paired but it would be better if they were because they tend to get lonely by themselves, they need a lot of attention or else they could become depressed and possibly even die.

The male parakeet is blue around the nostrils.
Parakeets can be wonderful companion pets with a vocabulary of up to 100 words. Keeping a single parakeet always in each cage is a waste of creature that could be hand tame and very affectionate.
If you want a bird that just stays in each cage and makes pleasant sounds get a couple of finches of the same sex
If you mean your children are toddlers, no the children are too young to understand how to treat a bird.

You only need one, but they are good when placed with other parakeets as well. Two is the same amount of work as one, and they are generally inexpensive. They will clean each other and seem to enjoy the company of other birds.

I guess it depends on how old your children are. Parakeets are on the fragile side. Their wings, feet, and neck are easily injured. Unless your children and very, very, very careful, or you don’t intend to let them handle the bird, you might want to consider something else.

Parakeets are very good with kids, providing the kids are good with them. Buy a young, hand-fed bird. Hand-fed birds are more used to be handled by people. I had a parakeet for 12 years, and he was always by himself, and perfectly happy. When you pair birds, they become more into their mates and don't respond too much (or ignore) their owners.
