No one really knows where heaven is, we just say up because the bible does reference people going up and God speaking down to the people. Heaven is in another dimention that we don't have access to here in our world and atmosphere. I just want to make sure I get there by Accepting the Salvation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!!

Excellent question!

It really has to do with psychology. Generally speaking, "up" is better than "down." On the most primitive level, you want to be on top in a fight. It's instinctive to feel anchored to the earth, but with the entire empyrean open above you; all the ideas associated with religion depend on fundamental considerations like these.

Probably because in traditional Pagan religions, hell was considered "the underworld", so therefore, if there is a heaven it has to be "up there". Besides, Olympus was the "heaven" of the Green pantheon and that was "up there".

Because, historically, all references to heaven have been directed towards the sky. When Moses received the 10 commandments from God, he went to the mountaintop to meet God who had come DOWN from heaven. When the Children of Israel received manna from the sky, they said it was from heaven. When Elijah was taken to heaven, a fiery chariot came down and carried him UP. When Jesus was raised from the dead, he was carried UP into heaven. When Scientist recently said they heard music coming from Orion's belt, they raised the possibility of it coming from heaven.

Not everyone believed it was up:

Jesus said, "If your leaders say to you, 'Look, the (Father's) kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the (Father's) kingdom is within you and it is outside you.

When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you live in poverty, and you are the poverty."

Because it is up, not down... Have yo been eating too much camel toes?
Also, the Bible says that Jesus will descend from heave to the clouds and with a shout from His mighty angel, the dead in Christ will rise first then those still alive, will all rise to meet Him in the air to go and dwell with Him in heaven. To me descend means to come down and to rise means to go up.
